As reported by Jaden Hawkins at WILX, the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has given a grant of nearly $156,000 to three Corewell Health hospitals as part of the state’s new Good Food for Michigan project.

“The initiative is designed to bring more food from Michigan farms directly to hospital plates, school cafeterias, and other institutions.

“Institutions such as hospitals prepare millions of meals every year. Under the initiative, food will come from nearby fields instead of traveling hundreds of miles.

“State Agriculture Director Tim Boring said the effort creates opportunities for growers and consumers.

“‘At a time when so many of our export markets here in Michigan have never been more chaotic and unpredictable, building markets to move Michigan products into institutions is a real opportunity for not only Michigan growers, but consumers as well,’ Boring said.”
